One of the Most Common — and Most Easily Fixed — Causes of Hearing Loss
Earwax, known clinically as cerumen, is produced naturally to protect the ear canal. It traps dust, slows bacteria, and works its way out on its own for most people most of the time. For some people it doesn't. The canal is narrow, or the wax is unusually dry, or hearing aids and earbuds push it deeper instead of letting it migrate out. When it builds up against the eardrum, the result is muffled hearing, a plugged sensation, sometimes ringing, occasionally dizziness. The good news is that this is one of the few causes of hearing loss that resolves completely in a single appointment. Many patients notice the difference the moment it's cleared.
How We Remove Earwax Safely
Our audiologists examine the ear canal under magnification before removing anything, so we can see exactly what we're working with and confirm the eardrum is intact.
Micro suction — A small suction device draws the wax out under direct visualization. No water enters the ear, which makes it a good option for patients with a perforated eardrum, a history of ear surgery, or previous earinfections.
Manual removal with curettes — Small specialized instruments lift the wax out directly. Precise, controlled, and often the fastest method for wax sitting near the canal opening.
Irrigation — Warm water at body temperature gently flushes softened wax free. Suitable when the eardrum is intact and the wax has been softened beforehand.
Which method we use depends on what we see in your ear — how deep the wax sits,how hard it is, and your ear health history. Often it's a combination.
Why Cotton Swabs Make It Worse
Nearly everyone has tried a cotton swab. The problem is that the swab is wider than the wax, so it packs most of it deeper into the canal while removing a little from the opening. Over time that creates exactly the blockage you were trying to prevent. Ear candling has no evidence supporting it and carries a genuine risk of burns and canal obstruction from wax dripping into the ear. Over-the-counter drops can soften wax, and are sometimes useful before a professional appointment, but they don't remove it. If the canal is fully blocked, drops can make the sensation temporarily worse by swelling the wax. If you have hearing aids, a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, diabetes, or you're on blood thinners, home removal isn't worth the risk.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
The visit is short and there's no recovery time. You'll be seated upright, we examine both ears under magnification, remove what's there, and check the canal and eardrum afterward.
Most appointments are completed in a single visit.
If the wax is particularly hard or impacted, we may ask you to use softening drops for a few days and come back — that makes the removal easier and more comfortable.
Afterward, we'll check whether your hearing has returned to normal. If it hasn't, that's useful information: it means something other than wax is involved, and we can test for it the same day.
Earwax and Hearing Aids
If you wear hearing aids, you're more prone to wax buildup — the device blocks the canal's natural migration path, and the ear often produces more wax in response to something sitting in it. Wax is also the number one cause of hearing aids failing. A blocked wax filter or a plugged receiver accounts for most "my hearing aid stopped working" visits. We recommend a professional cleaning every 3 to 6 months for hearing aid wearers, and we'll check and replace your wax filters at the same appointment.
